I find it both hilarious and totally fitting that Burt’s Bees Cranberry & Pomegranate Sugar Scrub ($13 for an 8-oz. jar) has a warning on the label that reads, “do not consume.” Seriously, they have to tell you not to eat the product because it looks and smells THAT good — like a jar of berry-licious preserves or a sugary frozen treat.

I dug into it when I jumped in the shower after I got home from the airport last night. I noticed on the list of ingredients (it’s 100% natural) that it contains a BUNCH of different oils, among them soybean, coconut, cranberry, olive and grape seed. The Zia Skin Basics Bamboo Exfoliant I was happily using last week just didn’t seem hydrating enough to restore the moisture that had been sucked from my skin by the recirculated air on the plane.

Sugar, soybean oil and cranberry oil are the top ingredients, and I swear I can feel all three. The product’s certainly rich, yet I can still feel the tiny grains of what I assume are sugar. They do have some grit to them, but they’re nowhere near as painful abrasive as the grains in Zia’s Bamboo (they may get the job done but feel like torture in a tube!).

Ingredients: sucrose, glycine soja (soybean) oil, crambe abyssinica seed oil, silica, zea mays (corn) starch, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, parfum (fragrance), vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry) seed, vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry) fruit juice, punica granatum seed oil, vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry) fruit powder, mel (honey, miel), hydrolyzed soy protein, tocopherol, aqua (water, eau), magnesium hydroxide, citric acid, limonene, geraniol

My skin sent me a thank you card this morning for using this stuff last night! It leaves behind a thin, oily film, but if that’s what you’re looking, and in this case I was, you may not mind. For what it’s worth, at least it’s not sticky.

As a matter of fact, it left behind a slippery film at the bottom of the tub, a knock against it that might make it unsuitable for clumsy gals, parents with young children, and people with older folks at home.

The grains are a little gritty but not painfully so, and Tabs loves that Burt didn’t test the stuff on animals. Thanks to French beauty brands like Vichy, your drugstore beauty shopping experience may be more interactive in the not-to-distant future.

The 77-year-old French skin care and makeup line, known for products formulated with mineral-rich waters, is leading the charge to change the drugstore beauty department experience by adding in-store beauty advisers and offering free samples and testers — perks previously reserved for boutiques and department store beauty counters.

Five years ago, Vichy introduced their products in CVS and Brooks Pharmacy drugstores in the US. Unlike other drugstore beauty lines that were stocked on regular store shelves, Vichy began selling its products through in-store “dermatological skin centers” staffed by trained beauty advisers.

Today, Vichy skin care centers can be found in select Rite Aid, CVS, Duane Reade and Longs Drugstore stores, and, by the end of this year, Vichy plans to have them in a total of 1,000 stores nationwide.

Remember the rise of beauty vending machines a few months ago? Now we’ve got the opposite end of the customer service spectrum.

Although one of the reasons I like shopping at drugstores is the fact that I can browse without really having to interact with legions of salespeople, I like the notion of having a beauty adviser available if I have questions.

I haven’t been to a drugstore with a Vichy dermatological skin center yet, but I’m looking forward to checking ‘em out.

Unfortunately, the groundbreaking exhibition “Skin and Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles is now over. Thus, this post is dedicated to those who were not lucky enough (like me) to have had the opportunity to experience the visual discourse between fashion and architecture as developed by MOCA’s Curator of Architecture & Design, Brooke Hodge.

Brooke graciously took a moment to talk to Fashion Projects about the relationship between these two disciplines and her inspirations in developing the exhibition. After reading this brief interview, head to FIT on April 18th to hear a panel discussion featuring Brooke Hodge, Patricia Mears (Deputy Director of the Museum at FIT and contributor to the Skin and Bones catalog) and others discuss fashion and architecture. FP: You write that you explicitly realized the connections between fashion and architecture when you were curating a show on Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Gar?ons. What was it about her designs that got you thinking of the parallels between these two disciplines? In general, how important do you think the Japanese designers (Miyake, Yamamoto, Watanabe, etc.) are to this concept?

BH: When I was working on the Comme des Gar?ons show, I started to notice that the clothes were described using terms usually applied to architecture—structural, constructed, architectonic, sculptural, etc. This got me curious about other parallels.

I think the work of the Japanese designers, especially Yamamoto, Kawakubo, and Miyake, is very important to the idea that there are parallels between fashion and architecture. Yamamoto and Kawakubo were the first designers to explore ideas of deconstruction in their garments (in 1982) and to create clothes that were radically different from what we had been accustomed to and from what other designers were doing at the time. Miyake’s sculptural shapes and innovations with pleating have also been very influential for architects, especially Frank Gehry. Junya Watanabe’s influence is more recent but still very important.

While it is true that the point of origin for both fashion and architecture is the three-dimensional body, do you think that the vastly different scales and sense of permanence make for an antagonistic relationship?

I think that for many years architects considered fashion to be frivolous and superficial. However, with the rise to prominence of more intellectual designers like the Japanese designers mentioned above, I think architects have more respect for fashion and realize that there is inspiration to be gleaned from it. Both use flat materials to make volumetric forms. With the increased potential to make more complex curved forms in architecture, thanks to computer-aided design, architects are looking more to fashion for construction techniques that will enable them create more interesting surfaces and to shape more complex forms. I think there is still a little snobbery on the part of architects toward fashion because architecture is much more monumental and meant to last many years and fashion is still seen as something that changes every season. It’s interesting that several architects have experimented with ideas on the scale of clothing (Diller + Scofidio, J. Meejin Yoon, Elena Manferdini, to name a few) because it is an easier scale to work with and quicker and less expensive to complete something. In the case of Manferdini, these experiments in the area of fashion have been important for her architecture practice. The pavilion she designed for the Beijing Biennale incorporated the process, tools, and motifs she has worked with in her clothing designs.

You state that the two main characteristics that fashion and architecture share are minimalism and deconstruction? In your mind, which characteristic bears the most fruitful dialogue?

Minimalism and deconstruction are two main STYLISTIC characteristics that fashion and architecture share but there are other important parallels. Deconstruction created the most important dialogue in terms of “style” since it had more impact in terms of creating potential for new forms of expression in both and was a much more radical shift in both fields. They both address basic human needs such as shelter and identity. I think the most fruitful dialogue is in the area of techniques of construction that are being adopted and adapted across the two disciplines.

The parallels between fashion and architecture are easily accepted by fashion scholars Coach Factory Online, perhaps in part because it lends a sophisticated legitimacy to a field known for its whims. However, do you think that the links between these two fields are as readily accepted (and desired) by architects and their critics?

I get the feeling that architecture critics (and some architects) are not yet ready to accept that there may be parallels between the two fields. This may be due to the snobbery toward fashion mentioned above. Also those who are less visually inclined may not be able to discern visual similarities between the two. None of the architects I contacted for the exhibition were reluctant to include their work in the show and most were very enthusiastic and mentioned their interest in fashion.

“Skin and Bones” is not the first exhibition to highlight the connections between fashion and architecture. In 1982 there was a groundbreaking exhibition at MIT titled “Intimate Architecture: Contemporary Clothing Design” curated by Susan Sidlauska. And this past year at the Center for Architecture in New York there was an exhibition titled “The Fashion of Architecture: Constructing the Architecture of Fashion,” curated by Bradley Quinn. How is “Skin and Bones” different from these past exhibtions?

Intimate Architecture was a definite inspiration for me. However, it did not include architecture—only garments that are architectural. The Fashion of Architecture was interesting in terms of the fashion it included but it too did not include much architecture at all. It also had an emphasis on fashion created by artists as well as some examples of clothes created by architects or by architects in collaboration with fashion designers. Skin + Bones is the first exhibition to examine the relationship between fashion and architecture in great depth with numerous examples from both fields.

A more recent connection between fashion and architecture is in the area of sustainability. Many fashion designers are following the lead of architects by attempting to use more ecological materials and processes. What do you think of this emerging parallel? Are there any other areas that you see emerging as a new dialectic between these two disciplines?

It would be great to see both fashion designers and architects truly use sustainable materials in a meaningful way that is accepted by the public. I think Testa & Weiser’s work with architectural applications for carbon fiber has a lot of potential for the future. I think architects are currently looking more at fashion and maybe we will see fashion begin to look at architecture more for inspiration.

If in London, don’t miss the Fashion in Film Festival Coach Factory Outlet Online, now in its second edition. Co-curated by Marketa Uhlirova and Christel Tsilibaris and titled “If Looks Could Kill Coach Factory Outlet Online Sale,” it tackles the links between fashion and crime in cinema–two inextricable themes, as the earliest incarnation of the cinematic woman of fashion—the vamp—perhaps starts to point out.

The festival takes place across the city in a number of different venues and shows an equally diverse range of films, from Dario Argento’s terrifying horror movie The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) to Cindy Shermann’s “darkly humorous flick” Office Killer (1997), and the silent film series by Louis Feuillade Les Vampires (1915) starring Irma Vep—perhaps one of the earliest yet most compelling incarnations of the feminine criminal in film.

The impressive line-up of movies is matched by an equally impressive array of speakers, including the renowned film scholar Tim Gunning and the fashion designer Bella Freud, to name just two.

TV Fashion Recap: 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony and Teen Wolf

Every other week, I break down the best of?TV fashion, featuring my three favorite looks from the last two weeks. This week, I was inspired by?the 2012?Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony in London?and the MTV show?Teen Wolf.?Read on to check out the outfits!

1. 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony: Neutrals, Lace, and Leather

London wowed the world with the 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony. Between the guest appearance from James Bond (Daniel Craig), the Queen’s surprise jump from an airplane, and the phenomenal choral music, I was immediately hooked.

But the real treat was?Isles of Wonder, a grand interpretation of the Industrial Revolution’s effects on the UK, directed by Danny Boyle. It used beautiful vocals, frenzied drumming, and large props to demonstrate the?pandemonium?of the time period, and then sped on through Britain’s recent history. Highlights included a silent tribute to soldiers killed during the World Wars, a colorful Beatles-themed marching band, and an assembly line forging an Olympic ring. Even if you aren’t a sports fan, it is definitely a must-watch.

The costumes were amazing and detailed, and I couldn’t help but notice that the clothing demonstrating rural England and the Industrial Revolution contained many trends that remain popular today. There were lots of neutrals, loose pieces, mixed metals, leather, and knitted fabric — all of which are hot now and for fall.

Outfit Inspiration 1: Sweet Summer Look

In?Isles of Wonder, the dancers and musicians wore lots of white, loose materials and neutral colors. The men favored cardigans and vests, while the women wore flowing skirts. The props they carried were primarily metal or leather. Pastels and purples were also key components of the heavily layered costumes.

To recreate the vibe, start with a loose tank and a neutral skirt. This Abercrombie tank is perfect because it has delicate paneling and a ruffled neckline, while this skirt?has sequin detailing reminiscent of the metalworking in the show.?Add a button-up cardigan, preferably in a purple hue, to add a pop of color and a bit of structure.

Now it’s time to accessorize! Delicate metal jewelry like a feather ring and bird necklace complement the outfit without distracting.?These nature-inspired accessories also reference the beginning of the show, which showcased the isles’ natural beauty. Slip on a pair of metallic heels to accentuate your legs, and don’t forget a nice leather satchel to complete the look!

Outfit Inspiration 2: ?Cozy Fall Look

While watching the opening ceremony, I was really inspired by the plethora of different fabric?textures. Costumes mixed leather, tweed, lace, knitting, crochet, and linen. The loose fabrics and layers are great inspiration for fall.

To capture the old-fashioned, effortless, and comfortable vibe of the opening ceremony, start with an oversized cable-knit sweater in a neutral color. This buttonless cardigan from Gina Tricot is perfect because of the interesting knit pattern and slouchy, open style. Pair it with a tank of a different texture; this beige lace top is perfect. Maroon skinny jeans add shape to the outfit and prevent it from looking too baggy.

For accessories, start with a stylish and functional brown leather satchel. Add a knitted scarf and miniature portrait necklace for a bit of the classic “British” look. ?Next coach shoe outlet, slip on a bronze watch and a metal bracelet reminiscent of the Olympic rings. Finish with leather boots – these are tall and structured, but have interesting slouches and buckles that tie in well with the rest of the outfit.

2. ?Teen Wolf (Season 2, Episode 9): Lydia’s Tied Crop Button Up & Retro Skirt

Though MTV’s Teen Wolf has already been featured as a TV fashion fave, it’s back by popular demand, and let’s be honest — Lydia pretty much deserves a spot every week for her trendy and eclectic style.

This episode focuses largely on Lydia’s birthday bash. Scott and Stiles desperately try to figure out who is controlling Jackson when he is in his reptilian killing-machine state, also known as the Kanima. Meanwhile, Scott and Allison’s relationship becomes even more strained and Allison’s family deals with the traumatic and ironic issue of her mother, a recently-bitten werewolf hunter slowly turning into a werewolf. ?Most importantly, though, we finally find out why Lydia is having hallucinations Coach factory outlet, forgetting large chunks of time, and generally going insane.

Lydia looked phenomenal (as always) in this episode, and while her terrifying hallucinations had me glued to the screen (and cringing), her crop top and ruffled skirt really stole the show. Her outfit was fun, flirty, and perfect for a summer date or evening out with friends.

In this episode, Lydia paired a button-up tie front top with a black A-line skirt for a fabulous and slightly retro look. To keep the focus on her gorgeous teal top, she kept her accessories minimal and neutral. The elegant nude and gold accessories also helped to add a bit of polish and sophistication to her outfit.

To recreate this look, start with a blue or green button-up top Coach Purses,?preferably?with interesting cut outs, like this one from House of Fraser. Unbutton the top slightly, like Lydia did, to emphasize your neckline. Next, add a flouncy black skirt to mimic Lydia’s retro vibe.

All that’s left to do is accessorize. Start with a white belt, pretty cocktail ring, and simple bag. While Lydia paired her outfit with white Macy’s shopping bags, this off-white hobo will do nicely. Finish with a pair of neutral heels or flats – your choice!
