Old Trafford may be “The Theatre of Dreams” where championships are won, but Carrington, part farm and part workhouse, is the stealth enabler behind those dreams. No one enters Carrington without the permission of Sir Alex. And no one leaves until they pass his tests of workmanship or are shown the exit.

Even the hard men of Manchester United scrub up nicely for a fashion shoot in T: The New York Times Style Magazine. But behind every renowned player are years of blood, sweat and tears in training. United’s history is a blend of talents hired from around the globe, joined with schoolboys raised to play with the attacking brio that characterizes the team.

Ferguson is imbued with a similar, if more aggressive, spirit, and works from dawn to dusk at Carrington, the “new” training camp that opened 11 years ago. Surrounded by 1.5 miles of fencing, entered by players in their Ferraris and by the 200 employees who teach, care for and watch over them, Carrington is the laboratory striving to maintain traditions.

The work toward this end takes place in secret at the Carrington training complex on the outskirts of Manchester. It is entered by a single-track road and guarded day and night by electronic surveillance, high wire fencing and 30,000 trees. The locals know it as “Fortress Carrington.” David Sebbah, T’s creative director, was allowed inside, as he traveled the globe with the photographer Max Vadukul in pursuit of portraits of the players and coaches.

Busby oversaw the rebuilding of United’s Old Trafford stadium into a modern arena that attracts crowds up to 76,000 strong. In contrast, he established a training setup in a place known as the Cliff, away from the public glare and the spying of opponents. Busby’s greatest triumph was to build it all from the ground up, and then rebuild it again after his team, the Busby Babes, was destroyed in a plane crash that almost killed him.

Housed inside two hangar-like buildings, the facility serves as a living museum to players past and present. They are the chosen ones, set on course by the club manager Matt Busby, between 1945 and 1971 cheap oakley sunglasses, and by Alex Ferguson, his successor since November 1986. Both are Scots, and both were knighted by the British monarch.
