Tennis burst onto the indie scene this year with the release of their self-titled debut album, Cape Dory, earlier this year. OK, maybe “burst” is too strong of a word for Tennis’ delicate, Cape Cod-inspired pop tunes — how about they gently sailed onto the scene? Led by the angelic voice of Alaina Moore, Tennis is a duo that also features Moore’s husband Patrick Riley on the guitar. Originally from Denver, the couple took a sailing trip along the east coast for their honeymoon, and it was the pastoral, let-the-wind-take-you-where-it-will way of life of the sea and the coast that inspired them to write the songs that would eventually become Cape Dory. If you wanna start a band, it’s a good idea to take an epic trip. Move to a tropical island, sail the waters, bike across Europe. Hike Antarctica. Get inspired. Tennis is a band that appears entirely and completely comfortable with what they do — crafting sugary pop gems a la 1957. Adorable lead vocalist and keys-master Alaina Moore sported her beautiful, curly mane of hair, remaining stationary at the mic for the majority of the set while her husband, lead guitarist Patrick Riley, danced with his guitar in his moccasins and tucked-in button-up, guitar held high on his chest.
The audience fully enjoyed the break from the afternoon sun, replacing the literal heat with some sonic warmth. Tennis’ tour with The Vaccines recently got canceled — as a result, Tennis came out from Denver just for Bumbershoot and it is a good thing. Even the weather agrees with Tennis this weekend. Their 5pm set at the Fountain Lawn stage should be a summer memory that will last well into the autumn.
