Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Satellite” by Eleventh Dream Day from the 2011 album Riot Now on Thrill Jockey.
If you stripped the artist’s name off of today’s featured song and played it for someone, there’s a good chance they’d guess that it was by some small-aged group of up-and-comers, refreshingly doing away with the frills of modern indie rock and forcing their point home with nothing but pure youthful energy and a few guitars. Well, they would have guessed wrong. “Satellite” is in fact a track from Riot Now, the latest album from veteran Chicago rockers Eleventh Dream Day, who formed not in the early 00s, not in the early 90s, but in 1981.
Since forming, Eleventh Dream Day have mostly flown under the mainstream’s radar, but they have been flying nonetheless. They’ve endured band members abruptly quitting; an unsuccessful, and arguably mismanaged 3 LP stint with major label Atlantic in the early 90s; extended hiatuses from recording (Riot Now is the band’s first record since 2006); day jobs, kids, and countless other unnamed obstacles that inevitably befall bands trying to prolong their careers. All the while, however, they’ve made time to continue to perform live, albeit rarely at times, and mostly in their home city of Chicago. It’s the force and unrelenting energy of these live shows that have kept the band’s pulse thumping for the last three decades, and now with the release of their 10th studio album and 4th on Thrill Jockey (their first release on the label being 1997′s Eighth), hopefully the foursome will take their live act on the road and reintroduce themselves to the music community.
A nation-wide tour is still pending, however, as their only scheduled dates are two shows later this month in Chicago and Brooklyn (click here for more details).
